Excavation & Trenching Safety

8 HoursIn-PersonCertification Card Included

Trenching and excavation work is one of the most hazardous operations in construction — a trench cave-in can bury a worker under hundreds of pounds of soil in seconds, leaving no time to escape. OSHA's excavation standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P) requires a competent person to classify soil, inspect excavations daily, and ensure proper protective systems are in place. This course trains workers and supervisors to recognize excavation hazards, classify soil types, select and implement protective systems (sloping, shoring, and trench boxes), and respond to an emergency. Includes hands-on soil classification exercises.

What You'll Learn

  • OSHA excavation standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P)
  • Competent person responsibilities and qualifications
  • Soil classification: Type A, B, and C
  • Protective systems: sloping, benching, shoring, and trench boxes
  • Daily excavation inspection procedures
  • Utility location and underground hazard identification
  • Emergency response to a cave-in or engulfment

Who Should Attend

Construction workers, laborers, utility workers, and supervisors involved in any excavation or trenching work. Essential for anyone designated as a competent person for excavation operations.
